Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos, which translates to "not intoxicate" or "not drunken", attributing to the age-old belief that this stone protects from and cures the wearer from drunkenness and addictions. Such intense was this belief that people from ancient times carve cups made of Amethyst and use these cups to drink wine, believing this would prevent them from being drunk.
Amethyst was first discovered in France about 25,000 years ago. Because of its wine-like color, early legends of Greek origin has associated amethyst with Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure.
A purple variety of quartz, Amethyst has become a symbol of royalty and sobriety throughout history. Historically, this purple gemstone was valued equally with diamonds, making it a priced and popular stone. This was until the 19th century, when a large deposit of Amethyst was discovered in Brazil, contributing to the decline of its perceived rarity. It has been worn by European medieval soldiers during battle, believing this stone will make them protected and more calm. In the Old Testament, it was one of the twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel.
Major deposits are located in Brazil, Uruguay, and Africa.
